The Alpine crossing for everyone

Alpe-Adria cycle path

The Alpe-Adria cycle path is an unforgettable experience along 410 kilometers from Salzburg to the Adriatic Sea. Villach, located at the heart of this unique route, is the ideal starting point to experience the beauty of the cycle path. From here, you cycle through the varied landscape of Carinthia and cross the border into Italy.

Shortly after the border, the route leads through alpine landscapes and picturesque villages, past numerous sights. Over 20 tunnels facilitate the crossing of the Alps, making the ride enjoyable for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels. By connecting existing cycle paths and creating new sections near Arnoldstein and other places, the Alpe-Adria cycle path has become a delightful route that offers cyclists the opportunity to explore the majestic Alps without too much effort.

In Villach, the cycle path first runs along the Drau before continuing along the Gail. The nearby lakes, such as Lake Ossiach and Lake Faak, are perfect destinations for a short detour. South of Villach, you reach Italy, where the route leads from Tarvisio onto the route of the old K+K railroad, which is considered one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Europe, and finally via Udine to Grado on the Adriatic Sea. What an experience!
The great thing about this tour is that you can return to your starting point at any time by train or cycle bus, which must be booked in advance.

Return journey by train:

Starting from Trieste, a train runs every day in the summer months between Trieste, Udine, Venzone and Villach. Of course there are other stops as well. The most popular, however, is Venzone. This is because it is a long day trip from Villach to Venzone, which is easy for almost anyone to manage with the return journey by train. The bike train is called MICOTRA.
It is important to book the train in advance online or directly at the ticket counter at Villach main station.
Further information and details on the return journey by train can be found at:
